  • This book is full of summer adventures that keep building on each other! Students will relate to the joy of summer and enjoy saying the lines of the repeated activities.

Phonics Focus: Consonant Blends

  • Give students a sound and have them identify which two consonants make  that blend. Write down the letters where students can see. Then have them look for a word that begins with that consonant blend.
  • Blends to use:
         o /pr/ protect
         o /sk/ skin
         o /sm/ smile
         o /sn/ snacks, snapshot
         o /st/ stay
         o /sw/ swim

Hands-on Activity: My Summer Safety Tips!

Skills: health and safety

Materials: My Summer Safety Tips! skill sheet, pencils, crayons, construction paper, stapler

  • Students will think of their own tips for staying safe in the summer.
  • Pass out the My Summer Safety Tips! skill sheets and review each prompt. Refer back to the issue to help support the discussion. What are kids wearing in the photos to stay safe? What are they using? What are other ways kids are staying safe?
  • After students have fi lled out their three tips, ask them which summer activity is their favorite. It could be an activity that is shown in the issue or something diff erent. How can they stay safe during their favorite summer activity?
  • Give students time to draw a picture showing how they will stay safe this summer.
  • Collect students  work and staple it together for a class book. Add a cover page using construction paper with the title Our Summer Safety Tips! Students can reread the class book as they get ready for summer break!
